The latest addition to Marins arsenal!

As soon as we got the opportunity to try the new Marin Rift Zone EL, we headed straight up to the south Lake District to put it through its paces on some challenging trails. As a fan of lightweight electric mountain bikes (EMTBs), I was eager to experience Marin's latest offering.

Components and geometry

The Rift Zone EL features an aluminum frame with 150mm of front travel and 140mm of rear travel. To keep the weight down, it utilises the Bosch SX motor, paired with a 400 Wh battery and compatible with a 250 Wh range extender. The head angle can be adjusted by 0.5° in either direction from the 65° middle setting, making it ideal for trail riding.

Drive system - Bosch Performance Line SX

Starting with a climb in a wet woodland environment, the Rift Zone EL felt incredibly eager. The SX motor and lightweight design worked seamlessly together, providing a natural and organic feel. The suspension platform was remarkably stable with minimal pedal bob. The bike simply encouraged pushing harder, with the motor amplifying every effort.

On trail performance

Moving onto flatter singletrack, the bike was lively and agile, popping off rocks and maneuvering with ease. It was genuinely fun to ride. On steeper, technical sections, the bike tracked the ground exceptionally well, inspiring confidence.

Perfectly balanced | remarkably agile

The balance between the bike's weight and the motor's power is impressive. It truly feels like a lightweight trail bike with an extra boost when needed.

We were fortunate enough to get in a few descents, and the bike's poppy and playful nature shone through on the downhill tracks. The Rift Zone EL handles remarkably similarly to a traditional trail mountain bike, which is a testament to its design.

The last word

In conclusion, if you're looking for an EMTB that excels on both climbs and descents, offering a natural ride feel and impressive agility, the Marin Rift Zone EL is worth serious consideration. It's a fantastic option for those who want a lightweight and capable trail bike with the added assistance of a motor.
